Love it or hate it, it’s undeniable that ‘Fairytale of New York’ (written by Jem Finer and Shane MacGowan and recorded by their band The Pogues) is an absolute Christmas classic. Since it’s release in 1987, it has been frequently cited as one of the best Christmas songs of all time in various television, radio and magazine related polls in the UK and Ireland, including the UK television special on ITV in December 2012 where it was voted ‘The Nation’s Favourite Christmas Song’.
With that in mind, OU Students Association President Cath Brown decided to sit down and create her own version with Open University inspired lyrics! Why not sing along using the instrumental version of the song below?
Sing-along!
It was Christmas Eve babe
At the OU
My tutor said to me, is that TMA done
And then he mentioned that
20th was when it’s due
But I put my books away
And thought about food
Now, much later on
The damn thing’s partly done
Though I’ve got a feeling
There’s some more bits to do
But Happy Christmas
I’ll get the Bailey’s
So I can see a better time
Once all the bottle’s through
I’ve got eight hundred words
I’ve got snippets of gold!
But the referencing’s got me
Now I’m feeling so old!
When I first took this on
One cold Christmas Eve
They promised me
It was all Dream Believe Succeed
I was focused
I was pithy
Even once witty
When the first module finished
I howled out for more
So much I was knowing
My confidence growing
I took on much more
Then worked through the night
The folks in the OU Facebook groups
Were talking TMAs
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas Day
Study sucks
Study stinks
How could I once think
It was worth giving up my sleep and my life
My modules, they kill me
Why did I do three?
Happy Christmas my arse
I swear these are my last
The folks in the OU Facebook groups
Were talking TMAs
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas Day
I could have been having fun
And so could everyone
But I put my dreams in this
When I first started
And I still keep them babe
I’ve made them part of me
Can’t wait for that degree
I’ve built my dreams round OU
The folks in the OU Facebook groups
Were talking TMAs
And the bells were ringing out
For Christmas Day
