The term ‘Merry Christmas’ is used worldwide to celebrate the festive season with others, whether it’s in person, in a Christmas card, or in a tweet.
The greeting (apparently) originates in 1699, when an English admiral first used the term in an informal letter. The phrase was then used in Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ in 1843, and has rapidly grown in popularity since then.
