Summer is coming and there’s a whole host of OU events and workshops to look forward to.


From online socials to study support, career advice to skills development – here are 10 virtual events you won’t want to miss. Everyone is welcome, so get your diaries ready… we can’t wait to see you there!

  1. 1 Get social!

    The Open University

    Meet other students and expand your support network with our social events and meet ups. Whether face-to-face or virtual, all our socials are inclusive, welcoming, fun and interactive. You can attend as many or as few as you like – there’s zero pressure. Study buddies are, of course, encouraged!

    Please join us for a friendly chat. This is a regular meet up, held on every Sunday.

    Book club
    Friday 3 June | 19:00–20:00
    Have you been reading lots lately? Do you have a favourite author? Join The OU Students Association's Write Club for an engaging session, talking all things books. This is a regular session held every four weeks.

    Don't miss out! There's a great selection of OU clubs and societies for students, alumni, friends and family. 

  2. 2 Hone your study skills

    Reach your full potential as a student with our study skills workshops. Whether it’s essay planning and writing, or learning how to present a strong academic argument, the interactive workshops will help you develop the skills you need to meet the demands of your course. Created with the academic calendar in mind, there are plenty of opportunities to support you throughout the year.

    Preparing for, and producing, your best EMA 
    Wednesday 4 May | 11:00–12:00
    This interactive Student Hub Live (SHL) workshop will explore how EMAs differ from TMAs and how to demonstrate your understanding at an appropriate level of detail.

    Preparing for exams
    Tuesday 17 May | 11:00–12:00
    This SHL workshop will cover practical aspects of exam revision, as well as how to mentally prepare to ensure you deliver on the day.

    Tuesday 3 May | 12:00–13:00
    Learn hints and tips on tailoring your CV to give it the best chance at making it to the top of the right pile.

    Networking woe, to networking pro 
    Thursday 19 May | 12:00–13:00
    This live workshop will help take the fear out of networking, and give you a headstart at becoming a networking pro.

  4. 4 Returning to your studies

    Are you looking to return to your studies? Not sure where to start? You’re not alone. We understand that life gets in the way sometimes. Throughout the year we have a number of events to help you find your feet after a short break or long absence. Connect with other likeminded students, rebuild your confidence and find a network of supportive students to help you stay motivated.

    In this SHL virtual chat, OU students discuss their own study journeys and challenges, with career experts and OU staff on hand to provide advice and tips. 

    Discover your goals: your first step 
    Thursday 7 July | 13:00–14:00
    Want to use your OU study to change your life, but not sure where to start? You’re not alone – many students are in the same boat. This live workshop will introduce you to the concept of "Career Readiness".

  5. 5 In the Library (Shhhh!)

    Need to improve your digital and technical skills? Look no further! The OU’s Library Services offer a programme of live online training sessions to all OU students. Each bite-sized session provides an online alternative to face-to-face training. Extra bonus: each session allows you live access to a librarian!

    Please note: Library Services events don't require booking! Simply join the room using the Adobe Connect link, and make a note of the event date on your personal calendar.

    ✔️Answering general academic writing and study skills queries
    ✔️Referring you to useful resources and library databases
    ✔️Helping you improve your digital skills

    Upcoming events:

    Smarter searching with Library databases
    Tuesday 24 May | 19:30–20:15
    This interactive session will go beyond Library Search and introduce you to library databases. Learn how to access library databases and take advantage of the functionalities, and how to devise a proper search technique.

    Reference management tools - an introduction
    Thursday 7 July | 12:00–12:45
    An introduction to reference management tools and why you should use them. Explore the basic functions of the tools and how they work with library databases, and word processors.
