The Great Covid Lockdown seems like a distant memory now. It was a time when people had chance to try out all sorts of different things to try to pass that time stuck indoors without contact with others. Some people tried their hand at DIY, baking banana bread or focaccia, decorating and gardening…

I didn’t do any of those things. But I did sign up for the first of what has now become six OU modules, and I tried my hand at storywriting. It was a way of keeping connection with grandchildren as I would write and video-record stories to send to them. My characters were an old lady, a dog, a cat and a little brown mouse – not sure why I chose them but they did go on all sorts of adventures together.

I wrote a couple of Christmas stories featuring these little characters, one of which was published on the Spillwords.com platform. This is the second one – which is just as soppy!!

So as the year draws to an end and everyone looks forward to a study break, hope you all have as lovely a festive time as the old lady, dog, cat and little brown mouse. Enjoy!

Christmas teatime

Christmas has come to the old lady’s house
For dog and cat and little brown mouse.

The tree stands tall with a star on high
Stretching upwards toward the sky.

Presents are wrapped and under the tree
A beautiful sight for all to see.

A sweet spice aroma fills the air

As old lady rustles up fine Christmas fayre.

Mince pies and trifle and shortbread and pud
And candies and chocolates that look oh so good.

“Hmmm,” said the dog, “that all looks quite yummy,
But not really things that should go in my tummy”.

“No,” said old lady, “these are for me
And the family next door who are coming to tea.

But you’re not forgotten, I promise you that
There’s special treats for you, mouse and cat.

Meatloaf and kippers and cheese for brown mouse
There are goodies for all in this Christmas house”.

As firelight glow flickered all around
And Christmas tunes played in the background,
The table was loaded with festive food
And crackers to add to the Christmas mood.

When the guests took their places at table for tea
It was the best Christmas feast they all did agree.
