During this month (March), it’s good to take time to recognise that one of the most common cancers affecting men, particularly over the age of 50, is prostate cancer.
Individuals such as Sir Stephen Fry and Sir Ian McKellen have all had to endure this, and have been significantly affected by the diagnosis and immediate impact to their lives.
However, Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is an opportunity to celebrate, educate, support and encourage people to continue to battle and deal with cancer, as this disease is unforgiving and can affect families and friends surrounding the individuals who endure such life-changing events.
As we grapple with the changes, we also have to remember that within The Open University and the Affliated Research Centre, we have various researchers who are working through many issues, including prostate cancer – seeking out answers for cures or to prevent such occurances from happening.
Whilst all this is happening, support groups such as Prostate Cancer UK, Macmillan, and Tackle Prostate Cancer are key charities who will continue to work hard on both dealing with the research, and supporting individuals and families when struggling through such issues.
