<p><strong>What is DSA?</strong></p>
<p>DSA is designed to support disabled students in higher education across the UK. It helps cover additional study-related costs or expenses that arise due to a disability or long-term health condition.</p>
<p>DSA is funded externally by your funding body, providing essential support alongside what your tutors and Student Support Teams offer. Eligibility will depend on where you live &ndash; you can check this on our <a href="https://help.open.ac.uk/browse/disability/disability-support-and-funding/disabled-students-allowance">Help Centre</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Real life impact</strong></p>
<p>Many students at The Open University (OU) benefit from DSA. For instance, Beck, who holds a Master&rsquo;s in Creative Writing and an undergraduate degree from OU in Wales, received a printer, screen dimming software, and speech recognition software to assist her when she couldn&#039;t type.</p>
<p>Additionally, students may be able to access support from Specialist Mentors, Study Skills support, and British Sign Language Interpreters through DSA if needed.</p>
<p><strong>How to apply</strong></p>
<p>Although DSA applications are not processed directly by the OU, the Student Support Teams (or Disability Support for students in England or overseas) are ready to assist you with your application. Our graduate Helen shared her positive experience:</p>
<p>";The OU was so supportive from the outset. They guided me through the DSA application, informed each tutor in advance, and were thorough in their guidance.";</p>
<p><strong>Tips for applying</strong></p>

<li><strong>Apply early:</strong> The application process can take up to 16 weeks so applying early ensures that support is in place for your module as soon as possible.</li>
<li><strong>Prepare your evidence:</strong> Check what evidence is needed and have it ready to submit with your application.</li>
<li><strong>Seek help:</strong> Reach out to your Support Team if you need assistance. You can findtheir contact details on the Help Centre.</li>
<li><strong>Consent to share:</strong> Giving consent to share information when applying for DSA allows your Support Team to communicate with the funding body about your application if necessary.</li>
