In today’s world, there are many perspectives on a wide range of topics. Some we may agree with wholeheartedly, while others may be harder to align with. Attending the OU Debate Club does not mean you need to have a strong opinion. It’s about learning how to locate evidence that supports differing perspectives and how to present those viewpoints effectively and adhering to the codes of conduct. A great way to boost valuable academic skills.
There are various roles in the debate, each of which helps develop our discussion skills. While the club primarily focuses on improving verbal communication, the skills you develop here can also enhance your academic writing and persuasive abilities. This is a safe space for members to share opinions, discuss, and debate, with participants researching both sides of an argument—the proposition and the opposition. The audience is encouraged to listen actively, ask questions, and engage with speakers for clarification. Members can also take on the role of chair, ensuring speakers stay on time and avoid straying off-topic, even if the tangents are interesting but not relevant.
OU Debate Club members will soon have an opportunity to take part in try-outs for an intervarsity team, with incentives for building a strong team to compete against other universities. You can read about the codes of conduct and register to join the club on the OUSA events page https://www.oustudents.com/ents/event/1157/
Let’s begin practising and developing key verbal skills. Look out for updates on OUConnect, general chat, and the club’s new website: OU Debate Club.
