Holiday countdown day 23: Top porridge toppings for the winter

Sometimes it's time to move away from the standard cereal toppings and branch out to flavours moreoften found at dessert time than breakfast.

Carrot cake porridge

Enjoy all the comforting flavours of this spicy, decadent treat at breakfast time by adding grated carrot, nutmeg, cinnamon, raisins and a pinch of salt to your oats. Add a drizzle of honey or agave syrup to add an additional level of sweetness!

Banana and peanut butter

This protein-packed option is a great choice for a post-gym breakfast. Simply add one chopped banana, warmed peanut butter (or peanut powder) and dark chocolate chips for a salty and sweet treat for your tastebuds.

Gingerbread porridge

Enjoy the spicy baked notes of gingerbread by adding crystalised ginger, cinnamon and crushed gingernut biscuits to your creamy oats. This would be the perfect alternative breakfast to have alongside the copious boxes of Celebrations on Christmas Day morning.

Black Forest porridge

Add some indulgent brightness to your morning with canned cherries, grated dark chocolate and a drizzle of double cream. If you're more of an overnight oats lover, simply add the same combination to oats and milk and let chill in the fridge overnight for a fudgy, chocolatey treat.

What are your favourite porridge toppings or breakfast treats for winter?
