We know that a lot of OU students start studying because they want to either develop or change their careers. Getting involved in the OU Students Association Conference will give you valuable experience and a useful set of skills that you can use to further your career or move to a new path.
Getting a degree is incredible and part-time learning alongside work shows a work ethic that employers are always really impressed by.
Getting involved in extra-curricular activities and events is another way to make yourself stand out if you’re applying for jobs and Conference is a perfect example for you to use!
There are so many different elements to Conference that you could discuss in a job application or interview...
Debates
These are structured sessions, facilitated by Association staff and Student Leaders which give students a space to share thoughts and opinions on policies and resolutions being put forward for voting at Conference.
Getting involved in these sessions will give you practise putting across and explaining your point of view to a group of people which might end up persuading them to vote a certain way (ever been asked in an interview to describe a time you’ve had to persuade someone to come round to your way of thinking?).
Have a look at when the debates are happening on our website.

Voting on Conference business and resolutions
Voting is done online and opens on Friday 24 May. Simply by voting you will be gaining experience in interpreting information and forming an opinion on how to vote on the resolutions presented to you.
Conference day
Attending Conference day itself online on Saturday 15 June will give you experience hearing about official Association business and the ratifying of minutes. You will also be learning about a range of interesting topics at our selection of Conference sessions!
Conference sessions include:
- Leadership
- Environment and sustainability
- Charity work and supporting OU students in financial hardship
- Advice on using Artificial Intelligence
- The importance of mental health
- And more!
Keep up to date with all upcoming Conference information on the webpage.
