Dear fellow students,
As a dedicated advocate with firsthand experience navigating the intersectionality of race, religion, disability, and motherhood, I bring a unique perspective to the table. My journey as a racialized Muslim woman and a mother of three has been shaped by encounters with racism, Islamophobia, ableism, sexism, and various other forms of oppression. These experiences have not only strengthened my resolve but have also equipped me with a profound understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized individuals in our society.
Each person’s journey is uniquely shaped by their background and experiences, and it’s imperative that our leadership reflects this diversity.
As one of three other visibly racialized candidates, I urge you to question who truly reflects you? Who has been historically underrepresented and will truly understand your struggles? This role requires someone who can extend empathy, foster hope and advocate on behalf of and with other marginalized students in our virtual campus environment. I recognize that I hold power and privilege as well in many ways, but I also know that I will do my best to represent you. Whether your lived experiences put you at the margins of sexuality, gender, ability, age, race, ethnicity, or faith, your perspectives are what I will bring to the table.
At this academic institution, we can collectively bring about change that reflects OU’s principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. As Vice President for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, I will create safer spaces to facilitate virtual conversations and play a role in holding OU accountable for their promises they have made to the student body. A vote for Afra is a vote for intersectional inclusion and meaningful change.
Together, let’s build a more equitable and inclusive campus community.
Vote Afra for Vice President for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion!
Hi Afra,
Can you say more about what changes are required to “build a more equitable and inclusive campus community”?
Given that our interaction with the OU and with other students is entirely virtual, what are the “safer spaces to facilitate virtual conversations” that are required?
Thanks,
— Kevin
