Staff and students in the Education, Childhood, Youth and Sports Studies (ECYS) school at The Open University came together during January for workshops on Student Voice.

I know tutors work hard to support their learners and help them to achieve – but sometimes things go wrong and they are keen to find out why and find ways to put things right. Obviously that can’t always be done, even with the best will in the world, but unless we as students provide honest feedback about issues, no-one will know about them.

So the workshop was a fabulous opportunity for students to meet staff, albeit via Teams, and have an honest conversation about how students can use their voice effectively to facilitate change and improvement. And to get assurances from staff that they do listen to and act upon any feedback we give.

It’s no use us muttering to ourselves about something we’re not happy about, and then hope someone else raises it. If everyone did the same, things would never change.

So I think we, as students, learned a lot and hopefully feel more confident to speak up, knowing that our concerns will be taken seriously. A win for Student Voice, I think.

We did have some questions (see photo) to steer discussions but I don’t think we actually needed them in the end. The conversation flowed freely, with no need for prompts ☺️.
