If you’ve ever looked at something in your module and thought, “Hmm… that could be better,” or found yourself gently herding your tutor group like an accidental academic sheepdog, you already understand the energy that made me become a student rep.

For me, stepping into this role wasn’t about being the most confident, the most organised, or the person who magically has everything under control (my cat walking across the keyboard mid-email would strongly argue against that). It was about connection.

As a disabled student balancing study, family, volunteering, and the usual OU juggling act, I wanted to feel part of something bigger. I wanted to support others who face challenges – whether academic, emotional, physical, or simply the everyday struggle of writing a TMA. At the same time, the cat presses “send” before you finish the paragraph.

Becoming a student rep gave me a sense of community.
It gave me confidence.
It gave me purpose.
But more than anything, it reminded me that distance learning does not mean learning alone.

We all have something to offer. And as reps, we get to turn that into something meaningful.

So here it is – the top ten reasons we’re all student reps (featuring quotes from real OU students):

1. You find your people – even from the middle of nowhere

“Being a rep has increased my sense of belonging. As a rural student, I’ve made some of the best friendships I’ve ever had.”
– Michael Jones

The OU distance shrinks when you find your community.

2. You meet people who share your interests

“Meeting others in my board of study with similar interests has been constructive.”
Melissa Jenkins

It turns out you’re not the only one who gets excited about your subject at 11pm on a Tuesday.

3. You gain meaning and direction

“Being a student representative shows commitment and responsibility, and it makes my life feel more meaningful.”
– Saruul Bazaard

A role that makes everything feel just a little more purposeful.

4. You advocate for others – and see real change happen

“It feels good to speak up for others and see real changes happen. Being trusted with concerns is meaningful and validating.”
– Harrison Jenkins

Your voice becomes the megaphone for those who need it.

5. You become part of the OU community in a bigger way

“I wanted to be involved in the OU community beyond my studies – and being a rep has been brilliant for that.”
– Alex Thomas

Suddenly, you’re part of the beating heart of the OU.

6. You see how the University really works

“Being a rep leads to other committees, and you meet academics you once viewed from afar. You realise they’re just people further along their journey.”
– Nina Taylor

You go from reading their work to working with them.

7. You build skills you can actually use

“You get to use the skills from studying in real governance settings and learn how to build a network.”
– Tracey Inveraray

 Practical, confidence-boosting, CV-friendly – and surprisingly fun.

8. You grow in confidence and feel truly part of the OU

“What I love about being a student rep is that I feel part of the wider community at the OU, and I get the chance for my voice to be heard in spaces where I wouldn’t normally be as a student. I get to learn new transferable skills, and it is really helping me build my confidence too.”
– June Dickie

Developing lifelong skills and confidence within new environments.

9. You learn to advocate – for others and for yourself

“Being a rep has helped build my confidence in advocating for other people, which is incredibly useful in its own right – but it’s also positively impacted my confidence in advocating for myself.”
– Nicolai Reynolds

Advocating for your own voice as well as others, and what you need from your own study journey.

10. You help the journey of yourself and others, and It reflects as confidence and pride for the OU.

“You can make a positive difference to the running of the OU”
– Loz Harris

Helping make changes for the students of the future.

In conclusion…

Becoming a Student Rep isn’t about being perfect – far from it.

It’s for the busy students, the disabled students, the rural students, the anxious ones, the confident ones, the curious ones, the multitasking parents, the night-shift workers, the keyboard-cat victims, and everyone in-between.

It’s about community.
It’s about improving things for everyone.
It’s about discovering that your voice matters far more than you ever realised.

And truly?
You don’t have to be extraordinary to be a rep.
But being a rep might help you discover that you already are.

If you’d like to get involved or learn more, you can find everything you need via the ‘Student voice’ section of the Open SU website.
