Come to the Birmingham Meet-ups!

Hi, I’m Jimmie, and for over a year now, I’ve been going to the Birmingham Meet-ups. They’re a great in-person monthly event that happens on the second Saturday of every month at Waterstones Cafe in Birmingham city centre, close to the Bullring. It’s accessibility friendly with lifts and lots of space; sometimes it’s quite busy, especially the closer to winter it gets, so do keep that in mind if you plan to come along.

It’s hosted by the lovely Bev, who, in my opinion, is Open SU royalty. She was given an honorary life membership for her services to the Open SU, and for her amazing volunteer work that she’s done for many years. She makes it a warm and welcoming environment, and helps people feel welcomed whilst keeping the conversation flowing.

Since coming along, I’ve met lots of fellow students of all ages and backgrounds, and they’ve all been lovely. It’s been fun to add some real-life social interaction, and not just virtual, to my study and break up the sometimes isolating online learning. I’ve met others going through similar things to me, whilst giving and getting advice and tips about the OU experience, and just having a general chit chat about our lives.

Being at the Birmingham meet-up is a fun way to meet other students and just take a break from studying for a few hours a month. So if you’re free and can get to Birmingham, come along and meet some other Open University students in real life.
