I presented at a conference a couple of weeks ago – I say “presented” but it was only a poster presentation. Not sure I could actually present in front of a roomful of delegates!!! But with a poster it could be displayed while people mingled – and there was no pressure to explain it all. Much less daunting.
Having had a proposal accepted, I then had to create the thing – an A1 size poster which is pretty big !!! I had to try to source a template and then get it printed – and pay to attend the conference – so not cheap. But even so, I was glad I did it. I think the majority of delegates and presenters were doing post-grad degrees so I represented the under-grads!! Why not?
I have to say it was a bit daunting, especially seeing names on delegate and presenter lists that I recognised as teaching staff on my own OU programme (Early Childhood Studies). But I steered clear of them – wasn’t brave enough to make myself known. But for a time I could also pretend I was as knowledgeable as them – haha!!! And after the presentations I slipped quietly away and went home to find my granddog waiting for me – he’d been dropped off during the day to stay with me over the half term as his family were going away. Nothing like doggy sitting to bring you back down-to-earth with a bang!!!!
Overall it was fine, and I survived the day and got through it in one piece. I guess sometimes we do have to challenge ourselves to do something that we would maybe prefer not to do. And what’s the worst that can happen?????
