The Open University students living in secure environments mostly study from paper course material which means they don’t get to access the articles that amazing students and staff publish on the Hoot.

This is why, every six months, we put together a bespoke newsletter to send to these students. This Hoot Newsletter is made up of relevant and interesting Hoot articles from thehootstudents.com as well as bespoke articles written by staff at the OU and the Students Association. There is also a student submission from one student living in a secure environment who has written an imaginative and engaging short story which can be found on page five of the newsletter.

This edition features more introductions from two Students Association staff teams, updates about Conference 2024 and how SiSE can get involved and essay writing advice from Student Hub Live. We also have an article from the OU’s SiSE team, written for anyone thinking of becoming a student at the OU.

We always love it when students contribute content to The Hoot, and we know that students appreciate reading articles from their peers. It’s no different with SiSE, who are invited to send in articles on topics of their choice, which we facilitate by including freepost envelopes with the printed newsletters.

You can download a full copy of the newsletter from the Students Association website, and the bespoke articles written for the printed edition are now available here on The Hoot online as well:

  1. CAWFEWAS – a short story
  2. Planning your best essay from Student Hub Live
  3. Who are the Community team?
  4. Who are the Executive Support and Staff Welfare team?

All printed materials sent to Students in Secure Environments (SiSE), including Hoot newsletters, must be in black & white. You can read more about this here.
