Discover the inspiration behind my writing, the ideas that shape my stories, and the lessons I have learned throughout my publishing journey.

As a writer, I am passionate about exploring ideas, developing characters, researching the world around me, and creating stories that encourage readers to think more deeply about life, society, and the human experience. Here I will share my writing process, the inspiration behind my latest book, The Prolific Writer, the literary influences that have shaped me, and some valuable lessons I have learned along the way.

Whether you are an aspiring author, a university student, an avid reader, or simply someone who enjoys discovering new stories, I hope you find something here that inspires you.

My writing process: turning ideas into stories

My writing journey has been influenced by my academic studies in arts and humanities, particularly my interest in history, politics, and the wider social sciences.

I have always been fascinated by how society develops, how people interact, and how ideas influence the world around us. These interests encourage me to explore subjects that matter, from political and social questions to global warming, climate change, and the rapid advancement of technology.

We live in a world where technology is constantly changing. Social media, in particular, provides opportunities to bring people together in conversation, share perspectives, and encourage thoughtful discussion.

I am interested in quantitative research and the ways audience engagement and social media can help us understand what people think about important subjects. Even when people do not actively participate in a discussion, they may still be listening, reading, and reflecting on the ideas being shared.

For me, meaningful conversation is about more than simply expressing an opinion. It is about encouraging people to pause, consider different perspectives, and perhaps discover a new way of thinking.

Writing gives me an opportunity to develop these ideas creatively.

Finding a positive direction through writing

Another important part of my writing process is the positive influence that creativity can have on our lives. Having previously been involved in boxing, I understand the importance of discipline and finding constructive ways to channel your energy. Writing provides me with a different outlet, allowing me to concentrate on something meaningful and productive.

I find writing therapeutic, and I believe it can contribute to personal well-being. It also gives authors an opportunity to reach people they might never meet personally. There is something special about knowing that a story or an idea you have written could touch someone’s heart, encourage them to reflect, or inspire them to make a positive change.

My faith as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses has also influenced my outlook on life. I value a non-partisan approach to politics, and prefer to avoid becoming caught up in the divisions and arguments that can arise from political extremism.

These experiences and perspectives contribute to the way I approach my writing. Ultimately, my aim is to turn my interests, experiences, and observations into something constructive: stories that entertain readers while giving them something to think about.

The Prolific Writer

One of my most recent books, The Prolific Writer, explores the journey of an author who experiences many of the challenges associated with creativity, friendship, and the pursuit of a literary ambition. My intention was to develop a story that would appeal to thoughtful readers, including university students and people with an interest in literature, academic life, and the creative process.

I have been influenced by classic literary figures such as Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare. Their works have helped deepen my appreciation of the English language, storytelling, and the power of literary expression. I also spend considerable time reading and researching, including reading the Bible. These activities have contributed to my interest in language and the way words can communicate ideas and experiences.

At the centre of the story is George McIntosh, a writer whose journey reflects some of the experiences and challenges I recognise from my own life as an author. Although he has ambitions as a writer, he sometimes struggles with creative stagnation. Like many people pursuing a creative goal, he must find ways to overcome periods when inspiration does not come easily.

He is also writing about students who are discovering their abilities and pursuing their own ambitions (contemporary theatre and performance). George is writing a book, and within that book he is creating characters whose own experiences involve creativity, storytelling, and performance. In other words, we have a writer writing about people who are discovering how to express themselves through their own creative worlds. It is a story within a story, with one layer of creativity opening the door to another. I wanted to explore how far an author’s imagination could travel, and how one narrative could encompass several different journeys of discovery.

The books and writers that have influenced me

Literature has played an important role in developing my appreciation of writing. Two writers who stand out to me are Charles Dickens and William Shakespeare. Their works demonstrate the possibilities of language, character development, and storytelling. They also show how literature can explore human behaviour, relationships, society, and the experiences that shape our lives.

My reading has helped me develop a greater appreciation of the English language and encouraged me to think about how I can use words effectively in my own work.

I am particularly interested in writing that gives readers something to consider beyond the immediate storyline. For me, being an author is not simply about putting words on a page. It is about developing ideas, creating believable characters, and constructing a narrative that encourages readers to engage with the world of the book.

I continue to learn from reading, researching, and writing, and these influences will remain an important part of my development as an author.

Lessons I have learned while publishing books

Publishing several books has taught me that writing the manuscript is only one part of the journey. There are many other decisions that can influence how a book is presented to readers and how successfully it communicates its intended message.

Here are three important lessons I have learned.

Lesson one: A good editor makes a difference

Having a good editor is extremely important. An editor can help identify areas that need improvement, strengthen the writing, and ensure that the finished manuscript communicates the author’s ideas as clearly as possible.

Writers can become so familiar with their own work that they overlook things another reader might immediately notice. A fresh perspective can therefore be invaluable.

For aspiring authors, I would recommend treating editing as an important part of the publishing process rather than an afterthought.

Lesson two: Your book cover matters

A book cover is often one of the first things a potential reader notices. It is important to find a cover design that reflects the subject, atmosphere, and identity of the story.

Typography matters, too. The font should be appropriate for the book and work well with the overall design.

The cover should attract attention while giving readers a sense of what they might discover inside. A thoughtful combination of imagery, typography, and presentation can help a book stand out in a competitive marketplace.

Lesson three: Keep learning and improving

Every book provides an opportunity to learn something new. From developing the initial idea to researching the subject, refining the manuscript, and preparing the finished publication, the process can teach an author valuable lessons.

I believe it is important to remain open to improvement, and to recognise that becoming a better writer is an ongoing journey. Publishing more books has encouraged me to continue developing my ideas, refining my approach, and reaching out to new readers.

The research behind my stories

Research is an important part of creating a convincing fictional world. For The Prolific Writer, I wanted the university setting and the surrounding environment to feel grounded in everyday life. This involved looking into West London University and considering the wider community around the university setting.

I was interested in the details that help bring a location to life, including:

The university environment and its surrounding community.

Local restaurants and places where people might meet.

Nearby bus stops and public transport connections.

Local railway stations and travel routes.

Student accommodation and the areas where students might live.

These details may appear relatively small, but they can help establish a stronger sense of place. When readers follow characters through their daily lives, familiar settings and practical details can make their experiences easier to imagine.

Research also encourages an author to think beyond the main storyline. It helps build the wider environment in which characters study, work, socialise, and develop relationships. I enjoy bringing these elements together because they help give a story depth and context. For me, creating a convincing setting is not simply about describing a location. It is about imagining how people experience that place and how their surroundings become part of their lives.

Looking ahead

Although I am proud of the books I have already published, I am always thinking about what comes next. I am currently working on a poetry book, which I hope to release in the future. I am considering a possible publication around summer 2027, although the timing has not yet been finalised.

Poetry offers another opportunity to explore language, ideas, and personal expression in a different form. I am looking forward to continuing with the project and seeing how it develops.

More broadly, my ambition is to keep writing, keep learning, and reach more readers through my work. There are always new ideas to explore, new characters to develop, and new ways to tell a story. I hope to continue building on my publishing experience while discovering where my creativity takes me next.

Final thoughts: The journey of an author

Writing is a journey that combines imagination, research, discipline, and a willingness to keep learning.

My academic interests in history, politics, and the social sciences have helped shape the subjects I find interesting. My reading has strengthened my appreciation of language, while my experiences as an author have taught me valuable lessons about the practical realities of publishing.

As I continue writing and developing new projects, I hope my books will reach readers who enjoy imaginative storytelling and appreciate the ideas that sit beneath the surface of a narrative.
