The OU Music Society is open to anyone with an interest in music, of any description, and usually – but not necessarily – to those who have followed at least one music course (such as A234 or the old A241).

The Society publishes a journal three times a year (spring, summer and autumn), with diverse articles and reviews of members’ interest and experiences. The most recent issue includes comments on a sea shanty cruise one sunny afternoon from Southampton, news from the OU Music Department, and the playing of a historic organ in East Sussex.

An AGM is held annually, usually at a museum with strong musical connections (such as the Ashmolean in Oxford), followed by the business meeting in a convenient cafe or pub (the crypt of St Martin-in-the-Fields church was one example). Events, open to all and not by any means restricted to Society members, are held once or twice a year.

The next event visit is to the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill, SE London, on 28 February. We will meet inside the museum entrance at 11am for a tour of the exhibits. At least one of the OUMS Officers (Chairman or Secretary) will be holding a copy of the latest journal by means of recognition.

The museum boasts an extensive collection of musical instruments, as well as other impressive items of interest. If the weather is suitable, there are beautiful gardens to explore.

Admission is free, but there is limited car parking nearby. The nearest station is Forest Hill (ten minutes’ walk away), while numerous bus services pass both the railway station (London Overground and Southern Railway) and the museum.

The contact on the day will be the Music Society Chairman, Mike Bechley.
