As the by-elections approach for the vacant positions in the Student Leadership Team (SLT), Michael Jones (Welsh Representative) and I (Ireland Representative) wanted to take a moment to reflect on our experiences so far and encourage all students to consider this incredibly rewarding opportunity.
My experience as the Ireland Representative
When I first began my studies, I had no set plan to get involved in student leadership. However, over my first two years, I noticed a lack of representation for Ireland, and I felt it was important to step up and make a difference. That decision led to my election to the team in July last year, and I have never looked back. To any student considering a role this year, I would strongly encourage you to put yourself forward. If you have a desire to improve the OU student experience, that passion alone is enough to make a meaningful impact.
In my short time in post, this role has provided me with incredible opportunities and allowed me to meet so many inspiring people. One of the highlights was attending the Croke Park graduation in September, where I had the privilege of seeing students celebrate their well-earned degrees. Additionally, I have regularly visited the Belfast office to engage with staff and students, and attended study days where I have connected with students from a wide range of subject backgrounds. The SLT is a fantastic platform for meeting fellow students and providing support in ways that genuinely make a difference.
The team meets regularly to discuss student issues and put our plans into action for our two-year term. My final piece of advice is to encourage all students to consider putting their name forward and seizing this incredible opportunity in student leadership.
Now, some words from your Welsh Representative
Being a part of the Student Leadership Team feels like being part of a family. Although there have been challenges, they have been more than worth overcoming. There is no greater feeling than helping to build a positive, engaging, and welcoming community within our University. The number of people I have had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with, and the relationships I have built, have been the highlight of my university experience.
Working with the Commission for Tertiary Education and Research in Wales while striving to create a thriving student community has been incredibly rewarding. I am excited to complete the rest of my term and would love for more students to join our team, bringing their passion and enthusiasm to enhance our collective experience and strengthen our student community even further.

Thank you for this great article. It motivates me to think about representation across the British Isles too. 🙂
Great to see some of the amazing work some of the celtic nations are doing quietly. well done both!
