Student Hub Live (SHL) is this year celebrating its tenth anniversary – and what a journey it has been!
Since 2014, presenters, tutors, guests, students, producers and editors have come together to deliver hundreds of live broadcasts, study skills workshops and community events that have helped take the distance out of distance-learning.
Over the course of ten years, so much effort, energy and time have been put into turning what was a brilliant idea into a reality. Tens of thousands of students have been helped through SHL each year, by learning and developing important study skills, sharing experiences and tips, all while feeling included, and belonging to a wider academic community.
SHL is collaboratively – and proudly – sponsored by the OU’s Pro-Vice Chancellor for Students (PVC-S) and managed by Learner and Discovery Services (LDS). Somewhere in the region of 80 live events are organised each year and delivered by associate lecturers, with an average attendance of 180 people per live event.
All events are open to all enrolled OU students and staff. The events range from workshops on topics such as essay planning and writing, time management, note-taking and critical thinking, to community sessions especially designed for niche groups such as carers and neurodivergent people, and we will continue to expand on this to ensure we reach an even more diverse range of students in the future. Other events on hot topics such as generative AI, academic conduct and well-being for students are always on offer too, not to mention end-of-term parties with special guests – after all SHL is also about having fun.
Feedback from students is generally very positive and highlights the positive impact the events have in their study journey, encouraging positive thought and engagement.
OU colleagues directly involved with producing the events are very proud of what has been achieved with Student Hub Live over the years, as feedback shows the events have been making a big difference to many students, especially in terms of feeling supported, included, and part of something bigger.
A special celebratory live event is set to take place on Tuesday,8th October 2024 at 11.00 am, broadcast live from the library in the OU’s campus at Walton Hall in Milton Keynes.
For this event, current and former SHL presenters are going to share memories of when and how SHL started out as project, why it was very much needed (and still is!), what we have been up to since then, looking forwards to the future of SHL, and how you can get involved.
