The term of your Student Leadership Team (2022–24) at the Open University Students Association is ending, marking the end of a remarkably successful chapter – both in the Association’s and University’s history.
Our team has left a lasting impact, significantly advancing the Association, whilst setting a high bar for those who will follow. So, a massive thank you to every member of the SLT, including those who left at some point during the two years.
During the last two years, the team introduced a wave of engagement and innovation. They launched initiatives that not only amplified the voices of students, but also fostered a sense of community and belonging within the diverse student population. By organising regular virtual events that connected students worldwide and ensuring student representation on most University working groups, boards of study and committees, we showed our commitment to making a difference.
One of our most notable legacies will be the changing our name from an Association to a Student Union – the work to achieve this fully has just begun after one of the most successful Association Conferences,
The team also placed a strong emphasis on mental health to help students succeed, both academically and personally.
Our efforts to promote inclusivity and diversity were equally significant. They championed policies that ensured student demographics were represented, fostering a more inclusive and equitable environment. Their dedication to these principles has created a strong foundation for future leadership.
As we step down, we leave a legacy of resilience, innovation and community spirit. We have shown that with vision, dedication and teamwork, remarkable achievements are possible. The new team of leaders will undoubtedly draw inspiration from our accomplishments.
Reflecting on our journey, it is evident that the Open University Students Association and the University has been improved by our efforts. Their influence will be felt for years to come, and as we depart to move on to new endeavours, our legacy will continue to inspire and guide the Association, ensuring the organisation remains a beacon of student leadership and advocacy.
We would like to thank not only our volunteers that work and give up their time for all our students – from meet-ups, degree ceremonies, clubs and societies to representing students within the University – but to every single member of our Association that makes our Association (or in the future our Union) what it is and will continue to be.
Also, a huge thank you to our Association staff – from the CEO down – without whom we would not have managed to achieve very much at all. In addition, a thank you to all the fantastic University staff whom we have worked with and who helped us make changes for the benefit of our students, including the brilliant staff in Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
– Written by Mark Walker, Deputy President at the Open University Students Association

Reading this, whilst it is a sad time for the the outgoing SLT, leaving a legacy which has been both challenging and difficult at times, it is with hope that the incoming SLT 2024-26 will build upon the foundations which both Margaret and Mark, not forgetting our beloved Gareth who for the most of the journey was a key individual of the SLT 2022-24, have achieved and will continue to represent on a voluntary basis. I am sure, as the deputy president elect, we will continue to embolden and empower students to continue speaking up for the various different issues which we all face, whether that is the cost of living, the tuition fees and the thresholds whereby one must pay once in employment, as well as the issues relating to disabilities and key communications between the Department of Work and Pensions and the Student Finance Company. Each issue we face, are going to continually “rear it’s ugly head” but we can as a team, and as a family, resolve ourselves to uphold and defend where needs be.
Well done @markjedburgh for all your hard work
