Hi fellow students.
I am Charon, an Open SU Hedgehog Ambassador. I am lucky enough to have a large garden where there are numerous spaces for hedgehogs to hide and potentially breed. Some have been created, such as turning a wheelbarrow into a hedgehog house, and others are more natural, including a pile of leaves and logs where hedgehogs can burrow and have their hoglets.
As part of our Hedgehog Friendly Campus campaign, Open SU and The Open University are supporting Hedgehog Awareness Week 2026 (3 May to 9 May). We are supporting the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, particularly their ‘Take the Hedgehog Pledge’ campaign. This campaign contains seven pledges:
- Add more hedgehog highways
- Create, improve, or protect a wild space
- Always check for hedgehogs before strimming, mowing, or hedge cutting
- Go totally organic in your garden or allotment
- Be net savvy
- Provide water for wildlife all year round!
- Become a National Hedgehog Monitoring Programme volunteer spotter!
You can discover more about these pledges by looking at the ‘Take the Hedgehog Pledge’ campaign page.
Please sign up for one pledge a day (or one for the week) at Take the Hedgehog Pledge – The British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
Thank you for reading
Charon
