I’m Morgan, and I’m standing for VP Student Welfare. Improving the experience for all students is hugely important to me and it’s something I’ve been chipping away at as a student rep. I’d love to take that a step further, and continue it with a leadership role. OU study and OU students are awesome, but the university is not doing right by so many students who struggle for a multitude of different reasons. All students deserve the opportunity for study to be joyful and fufilling, without endless battles for support and understanding.
OUSET and the Individual Representation Service are examples of the Students Association stepping up to fill a gap left by the university. Thus far, I’ve been working to improve accessibility and advocate for trans and non-binary students. What I would work for as VP Student Welfare is making sure that the university recognises the complex and often intersecting challenges that students face. At the moment, the support is focused around a few, very specific boxes, and it most often fails when you don’t fit neatly into any of them, such as having a common disability or being a caregiver. Students are whole, complex humans with rich lives and intersecting challenges, and the university needs to respond in kind.
I will fight for every student faced with a rubbish cookie-cutter solution that doesn’t actually solve their problem. I will fight for the continued survivial of the Individual Representation Service, and the vital support it provides students who have a problem with the university. I will fight for lived experience to be at the core of decision making that affects those groups, and for a broader ranger of students to be consulted. I will fight to make sure that the OU lives up to its promises of being open to all.
Above all, go and vote! Whether it is for me or for someone else, the process is richer for every person who chooses to vote. If I’ve convinced you, then I’d appreciate it if you chose to vote for me.
