Hey everyone!
I’m Lauren Atkin-Hill, and I’m absolutely thrilled to be stepping into the role of your new (cue the rainbow confetti)… LGBTQIA+ Student Representative at Open SU. That’s right – I’m here, and I’m queer.
By day (and sometimes night), I’m diving deep into the world of Criminology, fascinated by how justice is shaped and delivered in our society. After I graduate, I’ll be continuing my journey by studying Criminal Law and the Courts, because for me, understanding the system is the first step to changing it for the better.
When I’m not buried in coursework or reading legislation like it’s the latest thriller novel, I’m deep in the world of tennis, working professionally as a Licensed Official and Tournament Operator. I manage events, support players, and occasionally explain to parents why no, unfortunately, yelling from the sidelines isn’t part of the rules. Oh – and I’m a full-time Formula 1 fan (I will absolutely debate team strategies, why turn 1 chaos should have its own fan club, and who the GOAT is; just be warned: I have spreadsheets).
But here’s what really matters: I’m here for YOU.
As someone who is proudly part of the LGBTQIA+ community, stepping into this representative role isn’t just an opportunity – it’s a responsibility I carry with deep respect and passion. I know how powerful it is to feel seen, to have someone in your corner, and to know your voice matters. University life (especially online) can sometimes feel like shouting into the void, but I’m here to remind you that there’s a rainbow-coloured rope connecting all of us. My mission? To be your advocate, your cheerleader, and maybe your occasional meme supplier when things get tough. I’ve lived through the weird, wonderful, and sometimes difficult process of figuring out who I am in a world that doesn’t always make space for people like us.
This role isn’t just a title to me – it’s personal. I want to be your voice when decisions are being made. I want to bring visibility to the incredible diversity within our community – from our trans and non-binary students to those who are bi, pan, queer, intersex, or proudly defying every label thrown their way. Every identity matters. Every experience deserves space.
I’m here to amplify your voice, create a safe space where every LGBTQIA+ student feels empowered, included, and recognised, and I want to help build a community where being yourself is not just accepted – it’s celebrated. And hey, if I can make you laugh along the way, even better. Whether you’re out and proud or still figuring things out, I want you to know you’ve got someone on your side.
This isn’t just about representation. It’s about connection, community, and creating real change – and I can’t wait to get started. So, let’s chat. Let’s build. Let’s make The Open University an even more inclusive place – one where LGBTQIA+ students feel seen, heard, supported, and occasionally invited to yell about their favourite F1 team (unless it’s Mercedes, then we might need to talk).
Whether I’m around your way, popping into online chats, or sending supportive messages from behind the scenes, please don’t hesitate to say hello. Seriously – reach out. I’m here for all of it: the celebrations, the struggles, the questions you don’t want to ask anyone else, and yes, even the need for someone to just remind you that you’re valid and loved exactly as you are. Let’s make OU not just inclusive, but boldly and unapologetically queer-affirming!
With solidarity, sass, and a whole lot of heart,
Lauren
