All about… Freshers!

What is Freshers? Learn all about the celebration of students and Association life that happens twice a year.

Freshers Fortnight happens twice a year and includes an abundance of online events (and face-to-face events again from 2022 onwards!), social chats and activities to take part in to help you settle into your academic journey.

Freshers is an exciting time as we say hello to new students and welcome back returning OU students. Let’s find out more…

Who is Freshers for?

Contrary to what you may think from the name ‘Freshers’, Freshers Fortnight is for all OU students  whether you have just started your studies, you’re returning after a break or you’re continuing your studies, Freshers is for you.

We realise that starting or returning to your studies can be both daunting and exciting at the same time, and Freshers is a great chance to pick up some study tips, find out how your Students Association can support you through your academic journey and, of course, meet other OU students!

When is Freshers?

Freshers Fortnight occurs twice a year, in September-October and January-February – for the two module starts. When Freshers is coming up, you’ll find the dates and all the information you need on our website

What happens at Freshers?

Events

Freshers is two weeks of online and face-to-face events and activities to welcome you (back) to the OU student community. From events to introduce you to your Association and student reps, to opportunities to meet fellow OU students in events like a quiz and bingo, to awesome events run by our wide range of clubs and societies – there is something for everyone.

You can join as few or as many events as you like, and you can drop in and out of sessions as and when you have time. You can also choose how you’d like to take part in sessions, there is no pressure to use your camera/microphone if you do not want to. For each event, there will be a brief description so you can know what to expect.

Competitions and prize draws

Throughout Freshers there are plenty of competitions and prize draws to get involved in too, with some exciting prizes on offer! Freshers competitions have included a writing competition, quiz, bingo and more, with prizes from iPads to merch from the OU Students Shop

Why take part?

Freshers is an opportunity to get involved in the student community and feel a part of something bigger. Here are a couple of quotes from students who have attended Freshers to give you a sense of what it's all about.

I found it very interesting and informative and it boosted my confidence in meeting new people.

Being an OU student can, at times, feel like a lonely experience. Freshers reminds us that we are far from alone. There's an entire student community out there!

How can I get involved?

During Freshers Fortnight, you will find all the information you need on our website including how to join events and take part in competitions.

Throughout the year, you can find some useful information for Freshers on our website, including advice on studying and some key information on what the Association does for you.

And there is still plenty to get involved in outside of Freshers, including: regular online eventsclubs and societiessupport groups, and volunteering

To stay in the loop with what’s going on at your Association all year round, you can sign up to our monthly Association newsletter, and check us out on FacebookTwitter and Instagram.
