We all need something to anchor us
University life can be a lot. You’re balancing studies, finances, work, relationships, family commitments, and everything else that comes with trying to build a life for yourself. It’s no surprise that stress and anxiety can sometimes feel overwhelming. I’ve certainly had periods where I’ve felt pulled in different directions.
What works for me
For me, training provides a sense of structure and perspective. Whether it’s boxing, HYROX, or simply getting out for a walk, it gives me a chance to switch off from everything else for a while and focus on something simple and immediate.
It’s not really about fitness. It’s about having something that helps me reset, clear my head, and reconnect with myself when life feels busy or uncertain.
I’ve also met some fantastic people through it. People who encourage each other, share experiences, and remind you that you’re not doing life alone.
Your thing might look completely different
Maybe for you it’s sport. Maybe it’s music, faith, volunteering, art, gaming, reading, spending time outdoors, or being part of a community that makes you feel like you belong.
The activity itself isn’t the important part. What’s important is finding something that helps you feel grounded. Something that gives you a sense of purpose, enjoyment, or connection when things feel difficult.
Because looking after your wellbeing isn’t just about getting through the hard days. It’s also about creating more of the things that help you feel like yourself.
And if you’re still figuring out what that looks like, that’s okay too.

As VP Student Welfare, I’m here to support students through the challenges that come with university life. But I’m also someone who’s still learning what keeps me grounded. This just happens to be part of my answer.
